Decode-and-Forward Short-Packet Relaying in the Internet of Things: Timely Status Updates

In this paper, a decode-and-forward (DF) short-packet relaying model is developed to achieve timely status updates for intelligent monitoring within the Internet of Things (IoT), where generated at an IoT device are delivered remote server with aid relay in both half-duplex (HD) and full-duplex (FD) modes. To characterise data freshness updates, we exploit age information (AoI) as metric, which defined time elapsed since generation latest successfully decoded update. The average AoI formulated minimised HD-DF FD-DF networks finite blocklength regime. For relaying, introduce perfect approximation solve problem minimisation optimal blocklengths two phases. propose iterative algorithm by optimising relay’s transmit power blocklength. Illustrative numerical results not only substantiate validity our proposed algorithms, but also provide useful references network design, specifically thresholds relay.
